Take a Look at What is on The Horizon Report 2009

January 23rd, 2009 by Laura Pasquini | 1 Comment | Filed in Educause, News, Research & News, Web 2.0

The 2009 Horizon Report was released on January 20, 2009 at the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI) Annual Meeting in Orlando, Florida.  The annual Horizon Report, a joint publication of the New Media Consortium (NMC) and the ELI, highlights new technologies for teaching, learning, and creative expression. This collaborative effort between the NMC and the ELI identifies emerging technologies which will have an impact higher education over the next few years.

Not only does the Horizon Report overview the key technologies to come, it also provides examples and suggested readings for each technology.

Here are the latest & greatest emerging technologies included in the 2009 edition:

  • Mobiles (i.e., mobile devices)
  • Cloud Computing
  • Geo-Everything (i.e., geo-tagging)
  • The Personal Web
  • Semantic-Aware Applications
  • Smart Objects
Intrigued?  Well be sure to read more either via the web or PDF.

Question: How do YOU think these technologies will affect or apply to advising?
Discuss.

NACADA Tech on Delicious

November 30th, 2008 by Eric Stoller | 1 Comment | Filed in Web 2.0

Are you using Delicious? It’s okay if you aren’t, but let me explain why you should :-)

What is Delicious?

Delicious is a social bookmarking service that allows users to tag, save, manage and share web pages from a centralized source. With emphasis on the power of the community, Delicious greatly improves how people discover, remember and share on the Internet.

Instead of bookmarking web addresses solely on your computer, now you can bookmark them using Delicious and access them on any computer that is connected to the Internet. I’ve found that I regularly use Delicious as a replacement to my cluttered and oft-forgotten Firefox bookmarks.

I’ll be sharing my Delicious bookmarks of items that I want to share with the NACADA Tech attendees at: http://delicious.com/ericstoller/nacada-tech

Where is Clearwater, Florida?

November 30th, 2008 by Eric Stoller | 1 Comment | Filed in Getting Started, How to..., Web 2.0

Karen recently posted about Google maps and Google Earth over on her blog - Thurmond’s Thoughts. The neat thing about Google Maps is that anyone can click on the “Link” option (it’s to the right of “Print” and “Send”) and copy code which can then be used to embed a map on a blog or website.

For example, check out this satellite view of Clearwater, Florida:

The Technology Seminar Survey is Coming Your Way!

November 25th, 2008 by Karen Thurmond | No Comments | Filed in Research & News, Web-based Surveys

Registration for the NACADA Technology Seminar, “Advising 2.0: Utilizing Technology Effectively for Campus-wide Advising” is underway! We are excited that so many of you will be able to join us in Clearwater Beach Florida February 12-13, 2009.

In order to help the faculty for the seminar better prepare for this hands on seminar, we will be sending you an online survey. Please take a few moments to fill out this survey. I did it myself this morning in about 5 minutes, so it won’t take up a lot of your time. But the information you will provide is extremely valuable to the faculty and seminar planners.

Look forward to seeing you in Florida in February…oh, doesn’t that sound wonderful?

What’s a back channel?

September 25th, 2008 by Karen Thurmond | 1 Comment | Filed in Web 2.0

Practice is a big part of learning, so we will give you a chance to really practice. This site (nacadatech.net) will be used as a “back channel” to the seminar. This means that we ALL will practice what we are learning by posting reflections, pictures, videos, comments here!  The back channel will constitute the seminar within the seminar. Don’t know how?  Get ready to learn!
